Arnold Schwarzenegger has dealt with shoulder injuries, knee problems, back pain, and multiple surgeries throughout his bodybuilding career and lifetime.
But one thing he didn’t do was stop exercising…instead, he adjusted.
He trained around injuries, he adjusted the range of motion used, he reduced the weight, he believed in continuing to train, and HE SOUGHT TREATMENT WHEN NEEDED.
His philosophy was simple: “Don’t focus on what you can’t do. Focus on what you can do.”
As a Physical Therapist, I often see people make the mistake of stopping all activity because one body part hurts or keep pounding away at the same weight or intensity, and wondering why it is not getting any better.
A painful knee doesn’t mean you stop exercising. A sore shoulder doesn’t mean you stop using it. A flare-up of back pain doesn’t mean you spend the next 2 weeks in a recliner.
The goal isn’t to find a body that never hurts. The goal is to find a way to keep it moving.
If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, weakness, balance issues, or recovering from an injury or surgery, don’t guess your way through it. Movement is Medicine. Sometimes you just need a guide to help you find the right path. Let’s create a plan that keeps you moving safely while negotiating a peace treaty with your back, knee, or shoulder.
