Older adult woman performs the Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test to assess mobility, balance, and fall risk, demonstrating a functional movement assessment used by physical therapists.

Can you safely and efficiently stand up from a chair to answer the door or get to the bathroom in a timely manner?

It sounds simple, but these movements are essential for maintaining your independence. The Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test is one of the most common assessments physical therapists use to evaluate mobility, balance, and fall risk.

Try this simple test at home:

✅ Sit in a standard chair with your back against the chair.
✅ Place a marker 10 feet (3 meters) away.
✅ When someone says “Go,” stand up, walk at your NORMAL PACE to the marker, turn around, walk back, and sit down.
✅ Time yourself from “Go” until you are seated again.

How did you do?

🟢 Excellent: Less than 10 seconds
🟡 Needs Improvement: 10 to 13.5 seconds
🔴 Higher Risk: More than 13.5 seconds

The TUG Test measures much more than walking speed. It evaluates your ability to safely stand up, walk, turn, maintain your balance, and sit back down, movements you perform dozens of times every day.

The good news?

Mobility, balance, and confidence can improve at any age with the right exercises and training.
