Older woman demonstrates single leg balance while standing on one leg, illustrating the Single Leg Stance Test used to assess balance, stability, and fall risk in older adults.

Can you stand on one leg while putting on your pants while standing, stepping up on that curb, or stepping into the shower?

If not, your balance may not be as good as you think.

The Single Leg Stance Test is a simple way to assess your balance and stability. Poor balance is associated with an increased risk of falls and loss of independence as we age.

Try this simple test at home:

✅ Stand and place both hands on a countertop for safety.
✅ Lift one foot off the floor without touching your standing leg.
✅ Lift one hand off the counter and then the other.
✅ Time how long you can balance unsupported, up to 30 seconds.
✅ Repeat on the other leg.

How did you do?

🟢 Excellent: 30 seconds
🟡 Needs Improvement: 10 to 29 seconds
🔴 Higher Risk: Less than 10 seconds or unable to perform without holding on.

Remember, always perform this test safely. If you feel unsteady, keep a hand on the countertop or have someone nearby.

The good news?

Balance can improve at any age through the right exercises and consistent practice.
